Personal care is a service that is provided to any person in their home or Long-Term Care Facility and is related to the supportive, physical, and psycho-social needs of that person.
Personal care is provided by a trained and licenced Personal Support Worker (PSW) which sometimes require them to work as a member of a health care team under the supervision of a Registered Health Professional (RHP). Under the Regulated Health Professions Act. Supervision is required when performing a designated task which is assigned by an RHP.
A PSW can assist you with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts and transfers, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, and toileting. They can also perform assigned tasks which are delegated by an RHP in compliance with the RHPA once functional training has been completed.
To name some of the assigned tasks by RHP which can be done under supervision: the insertion of a digit or instrument into a body cavity, care or procedure under the dermis, and any task or skill needing a physician’s prescription.
What Our PSWs can do?
They continuously observe individuals and their environment. They report and document unsafe conditions and behavioral, physical, and/or cognitive changes to an appropriate supervisor, i.e., family member, employer, care coordinator, etc.
They communicate and demonstrate basic information in accordance with pre-established care plan such as daily living, light housekeeping, meal planning, and preparation. Also, they complete and maintain related records of documentation such as communication books and progress notes.
